Welcome to the website of Banking, Insurance and General Workers Union (BIGWU). Our Union is the Caribbean’s premier finance sector Union and also represents workers in the media and professional sectors.

BIGWU is the product of a merger between the former Bank Employees Union (BEU) and Bank and General Workers Union (BGWU). Both former Unions had their genesis in the banking sector of Trinidad and Tobago in 1974.

After several years of painstaking preparation, our merger was formalized by a Special Conference of Delegates on April 12, 2003.

This is indeed an historic achievement for the labour movement in Trinidad and Tobago as we pioneer into new frontiers of worker representation to meet the challenges of unionisation without borders.

The principal officers of the Union are:

Our website expresses our Vision, our Mission, who we are, our strategic initiatives and the realization that human capital (workers) must be put first in the global economy.

We believe in:

• The principles of decent work as advocated by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) through its Conventions.

• The compulsory involvement of women at all levels of our Union.

• We pursue as an imperative, within our union, the organising of young workers.

Our Union is a vehicle for the defence of workers’ rights and for the uplifting of their human dignity via social, economic, political and cultural advancement.
