Our Union wishes to honour and celebrate the life and memory of Yvonne Tenia who passed away this weekend at the Eric Williams Medical Hospital. Yvonne would have celebrated her 33rd birthday today (August 10th, 2009).

At this young age Yvonne had already accomplished much both in her career as a banker and significantly as Republic Branch Executive Member of BIGWU. She served with distinction starting out as a Shop Steward in the mid nineties and becoming an Executive member of the former Bank Employees Union in 2000.

Yvonne was a member of the RBL Branch Union Negotiation Team for the past two negotiations and her quiet but effective disposition was a genuine asset to the Branch and to the Union as a whole. She was trustworthy and dependable in all duties which she was assigned.

Even when she was posted to Tobago Branch just over a year ago she chose to remain on the Branch Executive despite the challenges of having to travel to Trinidad frequently for Branch Executive and Shop Steward Meetings.

Yvonne also found time to serve on the Youth Committee of the Union and made her contribution at that level as well.

On the domestic side she was a young married mother with an 11 year old son. At many meetings on a weekend she would have her son at her side and he became accustomed to the Union’s Office as he accompanied his mother on her many assignments at the office.

Yvonne accomplished all of this while quietly battling her medical condition for years without complaining. She truly represented what it means to be in the service of the working class.

Our Union was truly blessed to have Yvonne’s service for the precious capsule of time that she shared with us. She will not be easily replaced.

The Union salutes the life of Yvonne Tenia and we pray God’s richest blessings upon her son, her husband and her parents and other siblings.
